These savory Salisbury steaks, simmered in a rich mushroom gravy, are a comforting and satisfying meal ready in about an hour.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into 4-6 oval patties.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook for 5-7 minutes, until softened and slightly caramelized. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for another 5-7 minutes, until softened and browned.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and 1/4 cup cold water until smooth. Pour the mixture into the skillet and whisk constantly until the gravy has thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer for another 5-7 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  7. Serve the Salisbury Steaks with the mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
