About Us – Waddle and Cluck | A Real-Life Homesteading Blog

Lindsey Chastain a homesteading blog

Hello, I am Lindsey Chastain

I’m Lindsey — the writer, homesteader, and somewhat accidental chicken wrangler behind Waddle and Cluck. This blog started as a way to slow down, dig in, and remember that joy is often found in small, imperfect things — like backyard eggs or a muddy harvest.

About Ryan

About Ryan
Ryan is a CNC machinist and shop supervisor by trade, but his heart is in the sawdust. When he’s not running machines, he’s in the shop at home — woodworking, welding, or building whatever the homestead throws at him next. From garden trellises to duck coops, if it needs to be made, Ryan’s likely already sketching a plan for it. He brings the hands-on know-how to Waddle and Cluck, and keeps things level — both literally and figuratively.

About David John

David John grew up immersed in the landscapes of West Africa, where a lifelong love of nature took root early. After moving to the United States as a teenager, that same passion followed him into adulthood — eventually earning him a weekly column in the Skiatook Journal. Today, he brings that thoughtful, observant voice to Waddle and Cluck in Nature Notes, a collection of reflections on wildlife, weather, changing seasons, and the quiet details of life outdoors.

Our Story

We’re a family of six—plus a rotating cast of chickens, ducks, guineas, geese, dogs, and the occasional garden surprise. In 2021, we moved to what we now call home: a patch of land with room to grow, room to breathe, and plenty of room to make mistakes and try again.

We didn’t grow up farming or raising livestock. We just knew we wanted something slower, something more rooted. So we started small. A raised bed. A few rabbits. Then chickens. Now it’s compost piles, brooder lights, fencing projects, and figuring out how to grow food without losing our minds (or our tomatoes to the squirrels).

Living this way isn’t always picture-perfect, but that’s part of the point. We share what works, what doesn’t, and what we’re still figuring out — from muddy mornings with the animals to quiet evenings spent canning or building something new in the shop. This homesteading blog is more than just a collection of tips and stories. It’s a way to connect with others who believe in slowing down, getting your hands dirty, and learning as you go.

Why Waddle and Cluck? Because most days around here sound like that. And because this isn’t a picture-perfect homestead. It’s a real one.
